Lighting Candles

There is always something deeply spiritual about lighting a candle at Church, and indeed for children too. They can help us pray. They remind us of God’s presence, the offering of our prayers, and the presence of our petitions before the Lord in heaven.

Traditionally, God invited people to place a burnt offering before His altar, that this offering would transform to smoke that would rise to the heavens.  This is the significance of Jesus ‘cloudy’ Ascension, the rising of the sacrifice and its acceptance in heaven.
Burning a candle, can have a similarly sense of an offering of our prayers. The burning candle continuously transforms itself into invisible rising smoke, symbolising persevering prayers continually rising to God
